The Ortega family

The Ortega family alebrejis crafted keepsake boxes Shop handcrafted wooden boxes The Ortega family believe themselves to be traditionalists by being part of a culture that holds dearly to its ancestors’ passing’s in the art of wood carving. When this art form was first evolving, a lot of the wood pieces being made were for actual home use. Most of the wood carvings consisted of children toys, kitchen utensils, saints, small benches and pet animals. These earlier pieces were in their natural color which was primarily white. But over time there was experimentation with clay, ash and animal blood. These were the first introductions to color and over time aniline dye would be the standard method of coloring, known for its clarity, saturation and ability to penetrate the wood evenly. Alebrijes, as they would come to be known by (craft invented by Pedro Linares), have been around for over 80 years and it continues to evolve as artisans find new ways to create and express themselves through the art of wood carving. The craft has its home in San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca and the Ortega’s can only be proud to be part of this amazing craft as they create some of the most beautiful creatures and boxes for you…
